Where did the expression "eyes in the back of my head" come from?

I read it was started by the British when they came to India. Hindus believe in the divine nature of the cobra, that it was like a God. The cobra's hood has "eye-like" markings on the backside of it's hood. So it had "eyes in the back of it's head".
